Lahaina Maui Beaches

Napili Bay

Located in Napili north of Lahaina, Napili Bay is another cake flour sand beach with the amenities offered by beach side restaurants/bars. Smaller, peaceful and less crowded than Ka'anapali. Excellent surfing and sponging if the waves are 10+feet. Great breakfasts at "The Gazebo" located to the south end of the beach.

Mokule'ia Beach "Slaughterhouse"

Don't let the name scare you. this is an excellent little beach that sits near Honolua Bay. I recommend this beach if you are going to Honolua bay to snorkel as there is no beach there, and it can be good for body surfing during the winter months, skip it for surfing however. Excellent summertime snorkeling around the point to the north which connects directly to Honolua with tons of fish and usually turtles. The point itself houses a nice tide pool you can either swim in or just explore.

Old Airport Beach

Located to the north of Ka'anapali beach on the backside of "Black Rock". Usually no crowds at all during busy summer months and great water. I prefer the south end of the beach because the beach sand covers the ocean floor as you get in versus a little rougher underwater covering closer to park at Ka'anapali Villas. No surf break. Decent snorkeling directly out from Castaways restaurant, and of course to the south towards Ka'anapali.

Ka'anapali Beach

Located north of Lahaina in the resort area of Ka'anapali it is also known as dig-me beach due to the people watching there. This beach is large and crowded during the summer and less crowded in the winter. There are many restaurants and bars to get Pupu's but Hula Grill with its barefoot bar and live Hawaiian music during happy hour is the best. Excellent beginner snorkeling at the north end which is "Black Rock". snorkel out around the north point and look for eels! Jump or dive off of Black Rock and if you are truly adventurous swim around to the north and climb then jump the backside. 40-50 feet high and the water is about 25 feet deep. Yes, I've done it! Large southwest and northwest swells sometimes make the body surfing here exciting.

Baby Beach

In Lahaina off of Front Street near Mala wharf between Hard Rock Cafe and Longs drugs. This location is perfect for little ones wanting to frolic safely in the water due to the protection of a shallow reef 60 yards off shore. The water is really warm but too cloudy for good snorkeling on shore side of reef. In no surf conditions however, the snorkeling is great on the open ocean side of the reef.

$$$$ - More than $30

My Favorites,

Roy's - 2290 Kaanapali Pkwy, Lahaina, HI 96761 (808) 669-6999 $$$$

A great mid trip dinner. Start with a cocktail from Shawn at the bar while your table is prepared. I recommend appetizers you want to taste and enjoy...Not get "filled up" Do make sure to order the chocolate souffle' for dessert, even if you're on a diet! Make reservations!

Honokowai Okazuya Deli - 3600D Lower Honoapiilani Road # R Lahaina, HI 96761 (808) 665-0512 $$

Lunch is fast, even when busy as usual, friendly and simply outstanding food! My favorite is the Lemon Caper Mahi Mahi with 1 scoop rice and 1 scoop mac salad. The grilled veggies are great too.

Longhi's - 888 Front St,Lahaina, Hawaii, 96761 (808) 667-2286 $$

The quiche is great and when you order it is always "the last piece" so get there early and enjoy your Lahaina day. The fresh juice, French toast, and Pancakes, and potatoes are all excellent.

Plantation House - 2000 Plantation Club Dr, Kapalua HI (808) 669-6299 $$

I enjoy breakfast here and they have the best bloody mary around. If you're an eggs Benedict fan, try some of the variations, especially the Crab cake Benedict. Don't set up a T-time too close to breakfast though.

Sansei - 600 Office Rd, Lahaina, HI 96761, (808) 669-6286 $$$

Sensei's will at least match, but will most likely blow away your local sushi bar. Thursday and Friday nights have the added benefit of free entertainment Karaoke style. It's always fun and delicious. Half price Sushi 10pm-close on Thurs, Fri nights

Goofy Foot Surf School - Maui surf lessons from the best. 505 Front St shops suite 123, Lahaina HI 96761

Beginners

Launiopoko - South/West - Surfing and limited sponging

Launiopoko state wayside park is located at mile marker 18 on Honoapiilani highway just south of Lahaina. It is a great spot to surf for the beginner and intermediate level surfers. Small beach area with a sandy tidal pool that is large and great for kids. Restrooms and Picnic tables.

Breakwall - see Breakwall and Lahaina Harbor below

Intermediate to Advanced

Honolua Bay - North - Surfing and sponging

Rated as one of the 10 best right hand point breaks in the world. If it's big, the ride is incredible! The inside is known as the cave and this is your best bet for sponging. This is a heavy locals location so know what you are doing if you go and don't drop in on someone, it's dangerous!

Breakwall and Lahaina Harbor - West/South - Surfing, sponging

Located at the Lahaina Harbor. Breakwall is directly in front of the boats and Harbor is across the water channel to the north. They are very close in proximity but behave very differently. Good summer swell location. Breakwall is friendly and low key, harbor is more intense!

Shark Pit - West/South - Surfing

Short powerful ride right or left depending on the swell direction.
